Valentine’s Day – Saturday, 14th February 2015

Valentines, like a lot of celebrations has become very commercial. If diamonds and designer handbags are little out of your budget, check out some cute ideas to make your Valentines special….

This year’s theme is – do something different.

If you usually go out – have a cosy night in. Rent (how out of touch am I?!?!) or download a film.  Buy your favourite wine or non-alcoholic tipple, a box of choccies and snuggle on the sofa for the evening.

If you always stay in – go out together. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Some restaurants do offer Valentine’s menus but these can come at a cost. Go for a meal mid-week instead, or try a lunch time for your Valentines treat.

Visit the place you first met, go for an evening walk and try star gazing or do something totally different like hiring a segway!

If you have children, can’t get a babysitter and usually cook – get a take out. If you never cook, try making a special meal for you and your loved one. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a Michelin star chef, keep it simple. (Although some of my most memorable dinners have been total disasters which have turned into evenings we couldn’t stop laughing!)

Make a little love nest in the lounge, pop some cushions on the floor and eat your meal at the coffee table, perfect for a cosy night in for two.

Quick Valentine Ideas

• Cook a special breakfast in bed.

• You can buy novelty heart items for around a pound. Make a heart fried egg on toast or bake heart shaped cookies.

• Write each other a poem about what they mean to you, then read your poems out to each other. (Ok, I did enjoy this one more than my husband!)

• Leave a post it note with a special message in their work bag or lunch box etc.

• Have a champagne bubble bath for two. Obviously you drink the champage – you wouldn’t want to waste it!

• Set a budget of £5 and see who can get the most inventive gift.

• Make a Valentines card for each other.

• If all else fails and you totally forget – when serving their tea, draw a ketchup heart on the side of their dinner plate!!!

Sometimes, it’s easy to take for granted the people we care about the most. To tell someone how much they mean to you costs nothing and you don’t need one special day to do it. Spread the love.

Happy Valentines x x x
